The Rajshahi Cyber Tribunal on Monday sentenced a youth to five years of rigorous imprisonment in a case filed under the Digital Security Act for creating a fake Facebook account using the identity and pictures of a girl and sharing offensive information.
Judge Md Ziaur Rahman delivered the verdict in the case against Shafiul Islam alias Shafi, 24, son of Saiful Islam of Hasanpur village under Mahadebpur upazila in Naogaon, said public prosecutor Ismat Are Begem.
She said that the tribunal also fined the convict Tk 2 lakh, or one more year in jail, for default.
According to the prosecution, Shafiul created a fake Facebook account using the name of a girl, shared defamatory information and pictures about the latter and her family, and sent obscene pictures and videos to various people via messenger.
Later, the victim filed a case against Shafiul with the Paba police station under the Digital Security Act on May 20, 2021.
PP Ismat Are Begem said that the tribunal sentenced the convict to two years each under sections 24(2) and 29(2) of the DSA for creating a fake Facebook account by pretending to be someone else and sharing defamatory content, and one year under section 26(2) for using the information of another person.
The verdict would be effective consecutively, one after another, she added.
